BLACK CAT TAVERN

BEFORE STONEWALL - on February 11th, 1967, more than 200 people gathered outside of the BLACK CAT TAVERN in Silver Lake, California. The protest was in response to a police raid on New Year’s Eve (1966) when police stormed the small club because they witnessed two men kissing. The night of the raid 16 people were arrested.

Different From the Others (1919, dir. Richard Oswald)

Different From the Others, initially released in Germany in 1919, may be the first feature-length film to address homosexuality. The silent film stars Conrad Veidt as Paul Korner, a renowned concert pianist & closeted homosexual who falls in love with his student (Fritz Schultz). Their secret romance is discovered by a blackmailer who threatens to expose Korner as a gay man, which in 1920’s Germany meant public disgrace & possible incarceration. The story ends tragically with Korner being shunned by society & driven to suicide.

Different From the Others had a specific gay rights law reform agenda - director Richard Oswald & co-screenwriter Magnus Hirschfeld, a prominent sexologist/gay rights activist, made the film as a response to Germany’s Paragraph 175, a law which made homosexual acts between men a crime (and which also had the effect of making gays vulnerable to blackmail).

Different From the Others was banned shortly after its release and prints of the film were among the “decadent” artworks burned by the Nazis after they came to power in the 1930s. As a result, only fragments of the film remain available for viewing.

gamerisms:

Have you ever been so frustrated, so fed up with where you are, that you just want to throw it all away and run off to somewhere new? In A Closed World you play as a young person who has decided to do exactly that. This console RPG-like game puts you in the shoes of a young resident of a village just outside a forest that everyone says is a place of no return. Supposedly home to hungering demons and a beast that would destroy the village, the forest is forbidden and nobody knows what’s on the other side. However, our hero’s beloved — tired of the oppressive attitude of the villagers — decided to go there, as anywhere would be better than home. Now it’s your turn to follow after. Are you willing to risk everything to find out what’s on the other side?

A Closed World is a unique experience, functioning as a metaphor of the journey that many young gay people go on. In the game, you place a young gay person who is trying to get through a forest, facing demons that represent obstacles queer people may have in their lives. Your goal is not to kill or wound these demons, but to use logic, ethics, and passion in order to persuade them to understand you and to dismantle their prejudices.

 Um wow.

Do Ask, Do Tell of the Day: Navy Lt. Gary Ross (r) and his partner of 11 years, Dan Swezy, exchange vows at 12:01 AM on September 20, 2011 — the moment “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” officially became null and void.

The Arizona couple chose to tie the knot in Vermont so they could be legally united at the first possible moment after the discriminatory law’s official repeal.

We must make it clear that a platform of ‘I hate gay men and women’ is not a way to become president of the United States.

Jimmy Carter, relevant now more than ever. (via gaywrites)

Jimmy Carter is so BAMFY, it hurts. There’s also this.

Former President Jimmy Carter issued a statement Sunday announcing he is severing all ties with the Southern Baptist Church due to their treatment of women. A devout Southern Baptist for more than sixty years, Carter left the church in 2000 because of ideologically differences where the religion justifies the subordination of women. His announcementcomes after the Elders, a group of world leaders with which Carter is affiliated, released a statement on the issue of discrimination against women and girls by religion. In his statement, Carter calls “on all leaders to challenge and change the harmful teachings and practices, no matter how ingrained, which justify discrimination against women.”
